This is the 2nd time in 5 years that India has banned selling sodas because a governmental agency found pesticides in samples of Coke & Pepsi. The first time they did this (in 2003) multiple studies (funded both by the soda companies and by independent groups) found that the bottled water in India contained more pesticides that any of the soda sampled. And the tap water was absurdly tainted (with feces as well as pesticides). After this came out, the government basically apologized for the ban and lifted it.

I suspect that what's happening now is similarly reactionary nonsense by low to mid-level government officials. It's fueled by 1) legitimate concerns over public safety but misguided concepts of where it would be most effective to apply efforts, 2) a little bit of knee-jerk nationalism, with government toolies thinking something like, "We Indians should be drinking Indian beverages, not Coke. And now that Thums-Up [the Indian cola] is owned by Coca-Cola Company, we shouldn't be drinking soda at all," and 3) a refusal to recognize that the real problem is the general water supply in India because it would require REAL WORK to address that issue, and no government toolie wants to do real work.

Nothing safe about drinks full of corn syrup and aspertame.

Coca Cola and Pepsi are far more dangerous than the sewer water that the Indians are drinking. Whatever bacteria and germs are in that water, they have been carrying in their bodies for years and have developed immunities to them. There are no immunities to corn syrup, caffeine, salts and carbonation, or aspertame. Nothing can compete with the emptiness of soda calories, or in the case of 'diet' versions, the inexplicable hunger that is generated by drinking the sugar-free sweetened sodas that trigger weight gain, water retention, seizures, dizziness and other problems when these drinks, which used to be quaffed as treats in six ounce portions, are consumed in bulk as if they were water.

Because Coke and Pepsi are familiar to you and the companies are headquartered in the US doesn't make their products benign substances, believe me.

Sounds like a plan to me. Who do they think they're hurting by not drinking Coke or Pepsi? Do they think it'll cripple our economy? Hey, good luck with that! I can't imagine drinking sea water will do them much good either. Oh well, they get what they ask for. Dummies!
