What you are referring to is the "Placebo effect". There are documented cases of patients improving because they 'feel' they are getting better because they think they are getting actual medication.
To eliminate this bias in drug trials, most studies now use what is called a 'double-blind' study, where the participants in each group are unaware of what they're actually getting, with only the research monitors knowing who is getting what.
