I understand that the more touristy an area, the safer it is as well as the more expensive it is. Are there any areas that are a combo of a good deal and safety? If there are other areas other than the NE that fit this description please let me know. Thanks

Hi, I actually live in Philly and without knowing what you're situation is (whether you're buying or renting....or where you'll be working or going to school), it's hard to say what
area is best. I will tell you Northeast Philadelphia is by no means safer than other places in the city. If you're working in or close to the downtown area, Center City, you'll be very far away if you choose NE Philly.
Philadelphia is not an unsafe city for starters. 90% of the crime here occurs in poor ghetto neighborhoods, therefore if you're not living in such an area or passing through it...you're doing ok.
I'll assume you're renting and suggest the following, all are closer to the life of the city and not way up in the NE suburban section of the city.

1. Bella Vista and Italian Market neighborhoods
This area is south of Center City..bounded by Bainbridge on the north, 6th Street to the east, Washington Avenue to the south and 11th Street to the west. The area around the park at 9th and Bainbridge is the nicest. You can find a one bedroom apt here for $700-$800.

2. Graduate Hospital neighborhood
This area is from Broad Street (14th) to 24th Street and
Lombard Street south to Carpenter Street.
The middle streets, 17th through 21st as well as the central named streets (like Fitzwater and Kater) are the nicest. One bedrooms here go for around $700.

3. Fishtown neighborhood
This is where I actually live. It's just north of Center City along the Delaware River, right off of I-95, the first exit north of downtown. It's a neighborhood on the rise, undervalued for a long time given it's convenience to downtown. I bought a house here 3 years ago for $60,000 and it's more than doubled in value since then.
It's formerly a working class Irish Immigrant neighborhood(a major fish market here during the early 20th century, hence the name) consisting mostly of smaller rowhouses. It has a rough reputation but thats from the distant past. I've lived here for three years and never had a problem. There are a lot of artists and younger professionals moving in here because it's so affordable and close to everything...you don't need a car if you don't want one..I use public transportation and save major bucks by doing so. You can find a one bedroom apartment here for $400-$500 per month. The best areas are closest to the river and Girard Avenue. If you can swing it, look for something to buy...obviously a good investment...and there are 100% zero down mortgages out there. I did 5% down!

Northeast Philly is a tough section of Philly to describe. Many nice areas but also many not so nice. Stay away from Frankford Ave. Anything below Cottman and Frankford stay away. Northeast Phila Airport area is nice. Bustleton ave (Somerton section is nice) Rhawhurst and Fox Chase are good areas. I live in Cheltenham Township like 3 blocks from NE Philly and its so beatiful. Maybe consider this area!

there are always risks in living in philly, but the suburbs are lovely. The school system, police force, hospitals (doctors), fire departments, and safety are better than philly, and most of the suburban towns are about 15-20 minutes from the city. There are some places in the suburbs that have good deals.

Camden, NJ is rough. West Philly is dangerous. North Philly looks like a war zone. There are pockets of chaos throughout Philly as well.

Instead, move to Cherry Hill, NJ.

This is a city that's currently keeping a running tally of the number of murders that have occurred so far this year.. and it's usually the lead story! Stay away from it and move to the suburbs!
