Okay I don't know much about computers so be kind! As it seems to be with alot of people, I'm getting that pesky little blue star at start up that says my copy of windows in not genuine.....well, my computer needs to be updated badly, so I will purchase what I have to, to be able to update. Now my question is, I have many many things saved on my computer, documents, pics, etc., will I lose these things when I make that change?

No, basically your just buying a product key that will have to be entered. All your data and programs will not be affected.

i get that 2,but my star is gray. my daughter was able 2 fix this problem on her comp. without buying anything, but not on mine. i have tried everything and nothing seems to work. for a genuine windows XP they want 149.99---forget it!!! I'll keep the little star.my windows has a help link on it that has all kinds of useful stuff on it, try yours.there is a way to transferee your stuff and not lose it,but I'm not sure how. the windows help link should tell u how. if all else fails, go 2 windows.com and ask them.

That notice means that your copy of windows is not real I.E. bootlegged. If you go to www.windows.update.com and try to install their updates, they will tell you that you need a liscensed copy of windows. There will be a button that will allow you to buy a registration number from them and then validate your copy of Windows without reinstalling Windows.

its because you had a non activated version of Service Pack 1 when you install Service Pack 2 updates your computer will need to be activated which is why it is saying that it is not genuine?

If you have legal copy of your OS, you just need to re-enter your serial number.
In any other case :-) boot from some live CD and backup everything that is more or less significant for you..
