Hi there ,
There are two ways to look into this subjects , now they were happy - as they had less competition as the no. of people competing for one single thing is day by day increasing , they were happier as they had not faced the consequence of the pollution which we have now. The socio economical status was not so top sided loaded with the people who have more money will have more money (vicious cycle)and the poorer the vise-verse ( gap between is increasing). There were not so much war threats around like Tehran is facing now , which Iraq had faced which japan had experienced . They were not so stressed out due to the fact that time we were satisfied what we had as the competition was low .
They were less happy - because they did not enjoyed the benefits of the modern world , like fast communication , advance medical facilities ,the life expectancy has comparatively increased.

Just because we live in a day or modern conveniences and technology, it doesn't mean that we are happier or better off. There is something to be said about the simplicity of life that our ancestors and forefathers experienced. Give them our convenieces and technology and it would totally freak them out. Instant gratification due to modern conveniences and technology is making us as a society very lazy and complacent. All in all, no matter what generation past, present or future, happiness is ultimately gauged by how well you lived your life to it's fullest.

Yes they did. Our ancestors had a better value system. They had to work harder to have things which we take for granted and so they appreciated what they had more. Take for example the pioneers. They were happy to survive from day to day . I'm sure their venison and other meat, and fish, and vegetables tasted better because they had to hunt and fish and grow their own food. They worked longer and harder and had less leisure time than we do today. Family time together talking, playing games like checkers, reading and telling stories was at a premium, and they never knew when they would be able to do those things, so they enjoyed them when they could. Yes , I think because of the higher value system, our ancestors were happier in their lives than we are.

How can present life be worse?? In the past, they had to do physical work from 6 am to night. There was no toilet paper, no cars, no computers(no YAHOO ANSWERS), and if you had a cold you had 50% chance of death, etc. Life is not all good in the present but it is better than the past.

It's ironic that the latest generations are so obsessed with being happy yet, are so miserable, while the older generations had less available to them, had busier lives, and happiness wasn't an issue.

Well... there are different ways to look at it. They had shorter life spans, and they rarely travelled outside of their towns. Most people that are generations ahead of us couldn't read. But they lived their lives. There is no comparison of happiness of past and present because our lives are too different.

They had alot more physical hardships than us, but we have WAY more emotional stress so I guess it balances out....as far as the future, I can't see the emotional stress getting anything but worse.

I think it is a toss up.
They had a lot good and a lot of things harder and awful things too.
Ours are just different. We have hard things they didn't have but we have wonderful parts in our lives that they didn't have either.
