I see them as machinery and a means of transportation. But men seem to be fascinated by them. Even boys who can't drive find them fascinating.

Really don't know why. We all have little things that we consider a toy or hobby. With the men it just happens to be cars. With women it just happens to be shopping. Men don't like to shop and women don't like to work on cars. So there ya go.

the type of car can represent many things. power, speed, comfort, control, freedom, aggression, conveyance, competition, et al. It is engineering and art in motion that we have the ability to manipulate. We drive and compare. We are masters within our world. it wasn't an invention of necessity, we already had the horse for transportation, it was made for luxury and style. It is an extension of our personalities. It shows our youth or wisdom, sophistication or ruggedness, and economic standing. it is a man-made object we can use to explore the world around us

It's not just men sorry to say. I love my "68 Mustang. Wanted one since I was 4. Waited over 20 yrs for it and I have to say "Mmmmm MMMMMMMMMM"
Besides if you've been driving a car over 100 mph and loved it you just have to do it again and again. Or get something that goes faster.
I can't say I see them in the same light as you. Yes, they get me from one place to another but it's how it looks and how fast it will get me there.

Woman here, and I'd sell my best friend into white slavery for a year in exchange for a Ferrari GTO and a '67 Pontiac GTO, both with killer stereo systems and the original paint on the Ferrari , but a paint job I have in mind for the Pontiac goat. Plus a few mechanical mods for the PGTO.
:D
Ok, I wouldn't go that far, but I'd come damn close.

As your screen name is material girl lemme ask you this. What do you get out of coveting the the material items that you purchase or are given to you. I bet it is the same joy and satisfaction that men get from their material goodies. It is also a sense of pride, excitement, something to show off and look good in too. Does this sound familiar?

i kind of agree with the shoes guy. what is it with women and shoes? personally i dont see cars that interesting. just pretty looking machines. still, the men = cars thing is a stereotype, as not all men like cars, just like not all women like shoes.

You HAVE to have something. Cars arent my thing. Its electronics. But guys (The majority) are possessive. They have to have that "Thing" and it just so happens that a lot of us are into our cars.

Thats almost like saying, "Whats up w/ women and their shoes...." Not all women are into shoes (My wife is). But a lot of them are. Why? All you do is walk on them and get them dirty, scuffed up......but its their "Thing".

The same reason why the majority of guys like cars, is the same reason why the "Majority" of women like shoes...
