A small box with a lead that you plug into the back of your PC. When you turn it on an extra drive appears on your file manager. Data transfer is as fast as it is transferring data between internal drives. I've had mine about a year and am very pleased.

Just the same as your normal drive - plug it in to your USB port. Then you can use back up software to back up your HDD to it or zip and delete all your music or photos and put them on your external drive. If your last drive now is D: then the external drive will be E: you go to MY computer and click on it and you can make folders, drag and drop files on to it, whatever. If you've used a memory stick the same but bigger! A 300 Gb external drive by Seagate is £99.99 in Maplin Sale.

An external hard drive is the exact same hard drive that's in your computer. The only difference is the way it connects to your computer, usually through a USB port. External hard drives are good for backing up purposes as well as mobility as you can take data from computer to computer.

Its a HDD so its essentially the same thing. It worth checking the speed of your USB ports as there are different speeds and they can be upgraded quite easily to allow a faster passage of data. They are great for transferring large amounts of data from one place to another.

They're essentially the same thing as normal hard disks except they're in in a case and are portable.
