Location CAN be as much on the outskirts of Boston as possible, if that drives the price down. Some prices I've been considering are as low as $100. Hoping to find even lower. Could also consider a short drive by car to a subway station, then riding into downtown from there...

Lived in Boston for many years. If you're planning to tour Boston, you can stay just about anywhere in the area. Pretty much most hotels are near subway lines.

Your best bet would be to put in a bid on priceline after checking out rates with expedia and hotwire. From there, you can get a pretty good deal. The doubletree and hampton inn, and hilton have given me good rates in the past.

In Boston, parking is extremely scarce and really not needed. Don't rent a car. Use that money to spend on some nicer meals like at Durgin PArk, or NoNames, etc.

As for areas, try for Back Bay, or Downtown (financial district), or maybe even Kenmore (near Fenway), there's an expensive hojos there.

If you plan to go to places outside of Boston like Lexington and Concord, or Salem, or Plymouth, then you might consider a car for a couple of days. And in those cases, you might prefer to stay outside of Boston where the rates are a little more affordable.

But I'd recommend just staying in town, kicking around and having a blast! The town is small and can be walked if necessary. So if there was a place (nonames) which wasn't so easily accesible by Subway, you could always cab it there from close!

Have a great time and let me know if you have other questions.

Try the Hampton Inn in Cambirdge, it's right near the green line, or the Fresh Pond Best Western, which is a short walk (less than 5 minutes) from the red line

Try Priceline.com and low ball them good for a 3 or 4 star hotel. If that doesn't work and you stay outside the city, use Priceline to rent a car, since that always works great for me.

The youth hostels are the best, mostly if you are traveling on a tight budget.
