Ok. a friend's site has been on for about 6 mo's already. we've been participating in 2 kinds of LE programs, plus individual link exchange. Submitted it to yahoo dir. and a number of other directories. Constantly have submitted urls to the yahoo, google, msn and other SE's.
Submitted to DMOZ (but hasn't been accepted so far, and no response)
Submitted urls to over 100 SE's, webcrawler, jadye, you name it.

Participated in microsoft small business program. The one that's $40 a year. Submitted to Microsoft small buisness directory.

Verified page tags. titles, keywords, descriptions. The pages have fairly good keyword density. (for the most part are properly coded).

For some specific keywords, the site is still not visible until like the 7th page. on the 4th page in yahoo search the directory listing is visible.

The Q is that a newer site has bumped into like the 4th place. How do i move up the ranking?

Last Q:
The yahoo directory won't update the entry. paid $300.
HELP

My first guess would be your site is probably one of ten million others just like it! (you might bump your page count up if you can find a way to do it...not knowing where your web page is stored, I cant tell you how to do it) or you might also try the old " make the site background white and then fill it as full as you can with your keywords in the same color"....

Rank is a crazy thing.. our hosting business is listed as rank 13 on Yahoo and 14 on MSN, 7 on ScrubTheWeb and close to this for a few others and we have done everything and much more then you mentioned.. link, site se, our page is at rated 100% on all keywords, description, and title as for relevant to page content and this is after 6 months of page updates and hard work submitting. Google.. crap still we are still non existent there and we are Google Adword Professionals.. use a proper Google xml sitemap and all, big deal huh.. and we've been at this for like 4 years now trying to get better rank.. .. Must be who you know.. hahaha. Kidden, Actually just keep doing what your doing and do some sponsored keyword listing to make a buck..

Fact is you can't optimize your site for more the like 3 - 5 keywords / 1 good phrase actually. We only moved to 13, 14 and 7 once we listed this way and changed the content to be rich in these 3. Hope this helps. See our site under keyword phrase: Small Business Web Site Hosting on Yahoo Search.

The basic answer is that you may never move up in rankings. No matter how much you pay or how many directories you're in, it's still up to the google and yahoo algorithmic gods. It sounds like you're doing things right, just be patient and hope for the best.
