he asks you to work overtime & you don't want to. Is there a nice way of saying no?

"I wish I could, because I could really use the extra money. I can't though, because I've already committed myself to something else and I can't get out of it now. You'll ask again if you need someone another time, I hope! I'm so sorry I can't do it this time."

It's not necessary to go into detail about whatever it is you are already committed to do. But, if asked, be vague. You could say, "It's some family stuff." and just leave it at that.

They need you there, but you need a life too. There is no nice way, but deep down the boss doesn't want to work over either.

I'm with the "just say no" crowd. Be nice, but the less said the better. The more you say the more is sounds like a lame excuse. "I'm sorry, I can't do it today." If you have a previous commitment, you can say that, but don't lie.

If they push, you can say there is something you have to take care of at home. (Believe me, there is ALWAYS something you have to take care of at home. Laundry, dishes, paint, plumbing....think about it. Isn't there SOMEthing at your home you should take care of?)

Just do it. Who knows, he could promote you and if not, you'd still be making more money for working overtime. If you really don't want to though, just don't lie and tell them that something came up, and something did: boredom, lol. ^_^ Good luck!

No Need to Glaze Anything Over

it depends on how much you like your job and how much you want to keep it. if you have nothing else to do, it wouldn't hurt you to stay and will make you more valuable as an employee. if you really do have something else that you can't get out of, say so.

Unless it's my general manager asking, I just say no. For some reason, I just can't tell my gm no.

I hate that kind of situation....

If you feel too guilty you should probably stay, unless you really have serious plans.
