People tend to believe & act on non-verbal communication more than verbal communication, so in that way the information conveyed through non-verbal communication is far more powerful.

We need to convey our exact meaning to the others exactly and clearly that is the main role of verbal communications (speaking) over using non-verbal communications particularly when we communicate with our partners by using some communication tools, such as phone, Internet messenger, etc. The other emotion and gestures ply a completion role for convey our information to others, so we see most of messenger tools used with many webs, like yahoo, hotmail, etc. add some icons to express emotion but would never able to create a ready peace of speech! Further, the non-verbal communications can be understood and interpreted in some other ways far from the wanted meaning while verbal communications almost give the exact meaning. So we can see in official places, such as courts never use non-verbal communications. Regards.

Elements of Communication
Vocal – The voice of the speaker: this includes the vocal variety, quality, rate, volume, and vocal pauses
Visual – What we see of the speaker: this includes eye contact, posture, gestures, and facial expressions. Otherwise known as body language.
Verbal – What the speaker actually says
What Has the Greatest Impact?
•38 % Vocal (The way it is said)
•55 % Visual (What is seen)
• 7 % Verbal (The words)
100 % Total
The impact of the non-verbal (vocal and visual is quite powerful) = 93%

The question that you asked, for many, will suggest that a conscious effort should be made to determine which kind of stimuli makes a person feel weak. Because you are aspiring to be a cult leader it's OK to suggest that understanding these real communication phenomenon will help the many readers determine if they enjoy a mutual friendship or a master-slave relationship. To be a better parent--people should concentrate more on what they (themself) are saying, the quality. Kids can be furtive, but when and why is a child deceitful ? A lot of parents have to work too much to make ends meet.

Yeah, I never thought about it before,
but it really is the non verbal
communication that is the most
powerful. I used to be able to
give my kids a look that would
change their entire personality
in the blink of an eye.
There are lots of other ways to
look at other people, like husbands;
the 'come hither' look, the certain
walk, tilt of the head, etc.
People that you do not wish to speak
to in public; the 'look right through
you' look, the turning of the head,
oh my yes, there is definitely
power in non verbal.

I think non-verbal communication is most powerful, simply because it takes less time.
When my mom gave us 'the look' we behaved. No need to yell, smack, or even raise a finger, just LOOK at us as if she was disappointed!
That was true POWER!
I did the same with my daughter. She knew to watch me for reactions; if I didn't like what she was doing, all I had to do was change my facial expression. I have led entire teams at work the same way, I must say. It is very effective.

I believe that the Verbal is more powerful. There is the power of life and death in the tongue. God created the Universe with the spoken word. He has given us that same power!

A fist is powerful. My mom used to give me a mean look that scared the $hit out of me so maybe nonverbal is powerful.

Depends on each particular situation and interpersonal interaction.
A combination of words and gestures seems powerful and capitivating.

Definately non verbal...our first impressions of someone can be imprinted without speech. Our body positioning also dictates how another person will react to us.
