Electronic mail, abbreviated e-mail or email, is a method of composing, sending, storing, and receiving messages over electronic communication systems. The term e-mail applies both to the Internet e-mail system based on the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and to intranet systems allowing users within one company to e-mail each other. Often these workgroup collaboration organizations may use the Internet protocols for internal e-mail service.

Email stands for electronic-mail, is a mechanism where in a person can send a message (text content) to another person, who could be anywere in the world but connected to internet.

Every person who wants to communicate (either sending or receiving) using email, should have an globally unique id called email id.

Email id (usually) consists of tow parts. domain and your name.

For ex., in johnvictor@yahoo.com, yahoo.com is the domain which is unique in the world and johnvictor is your id which is unique in the domain yahoo.com.

So when one sends an email to johnvictor@yahoo.com, software first sends the email to yahoo.com domain computer only because it has no idea who that johnvictor is. Yahoo.com domain computer, would in turn let's you access the mails using some authentication mechanism.
