Why can american dollars be spent throughout Canada (or at least throughout Ontario because thats where i've been) without an exchange and Canadian money (except for pennies and nickels) isn't accepted here? Is American money accepted in other countries as well (with out an exchange)? This may be completely stupid but I was curious. I live in michigan and travel to Canada often, I never have to exchange my money but when they give me change its canadian and I have to change it back when I come home. It's just been something that I've wondered.....

you only get about .30 more canadian per dollar, its really easy to figure out how much to pay, say you owe $50 canadian, give about $45 US, i dont end up paying more. Its just convenient to not change. I know our dollar is worth more..

I've been to Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Peru, Germany, Guam, Qatar, and Ireland and everyone accepts dollars in those places. Most other countries won't accept bills that are wrinkled or ripped (even a tiny tear) though....so make sure you always keep mint condition bills for emergencies

The reason why you could spend your american dollars in canada is because the business that you went were willing to accept them. If they did not perform any currency exchange, than they are effectively charging you an "exchange" since the value of the US dollar is slightly higher than the Canadian dollar. Some countries will accept US currency since that is the national currency. I also have had experience using US dollars at other places in asia, but in general, it isn't recommend since I could get a better exchange rate going somewhere else than using my US dollars.

♡I'm an American living in Japan and you cannot spend your US dollars here. You have to exchange your dollars/money to Japanese yen and then you can spend.
The stores and markets where I live do not accept dollars and they have small signs posted that say they do not exchange money either. Places that accept credit cards take ALL credit cards though, then your card co. deals with the daily exchange rate when they bill you. I guess they think it would be too hard to give change or a fair rate with the constant dollar/yen rates changing.(*^o^*)

I think it is the decision of the US store owner whether or not to accept Canadian coins. They may incur a fee from their bank for exchanging them and don't want to go to the trouble and expense. American money is accepted in Bermuda but I'm not sure where else. Your bank can tell you more about this and so can AAA, the auto club

Sounds like the Canadians ripped you off, that's like Mexico they try to pretend they are the same value even though te Mexican dollar is much much less than an american dollar. They'll glady take your dollar without acknowledging the exchange rate.

American money is worth more and Canadian less - so if you pay with US dollars you're paying too much and if you get Canadian change you have been short changed. So, it is win -win for the Canadians.

Because Canadian money is worth less than American money; therefore, shops in this country don't accept the Canadian money.

I come right here because i do not get carry of adequate interest in the Royalty section. EDIT: Your further files might want to easily as fairly ask why, at the same time as an atheist has a question, do Christians tell them to "study the Bible" or answer with miles of reproduction/previous textual content. there is no longer something effective from such an answer, basically as there is no longer something to be received from affirming that there is not any god. yet this is a public talk board, an section to ask questions or talk problems with a non secular and religious nature. we can continuously get carry of solutions we are not searching for, yet as authentic looking, to blame human beings, we ought to continuously be able to seem previous that. do not you compromise?
