Emo stands for emotional and is a sub-genre of punk music. Emo music tends to be more melodic and less chaotic in nature than regular punk and hardcore. Emo began somewhere in the 80s but started transforming in th 90s and combining itself with Indie rock music.

The Get Up Kids
Saves the Day
Weezer (especially Pinkerton album)
Jimmy Eat World
Dashboard Confessional
Some confusion comes over the definition because when emo started to become popular people started to use emo to describe their fashion style and anyone that displayed strong emotion.

i'm an emo person...go ahead people hate on me and say how much i suck or how much emo people suck.....but i am. emo is someone who is basically a wreckless careless person to everone except for a select few they love, and rarely even them, not talking physical harm to others cuase thats just abusive and stupid. i think it's more of a mental thing like depression....the few friends i have that are emo have been screwed since the beginning of trying to figure their lives out or have been hurt by a girl they love and can't stop thinking about what they did wrong or if they even did anything wrong. if you listen to the majority of emo music and take the lyrics in, it's really depressing lol.

emo i would say is the cross between Skater and Goth. they often wear there hair over onew eye. they wear tight pants, band t-shirts, vans or converse. . just very punky looking. here is a link it is explains it completely. hope this helped!
