I don't want to record my singing onto a cassette tape as nowadays many people don't have a casette recorder. People have CD or DVD players.

Well it really depends if you are going to go professional or if ur just experimenting if ur going to do it pro.. i dont know but if your just messing around use sound recorder and the mic on ur computer then u can mix in a music track then save it and burn it to a cd hope that helps!!

Use the mic input on your sound card and the record (mic setting) player on your computer. You could also be inputting music at the same time (sing-along) using the (stereo) line input jack on the sound card. The only equipment that you need, other than what is already in your computer, is a mic and a set of patch cords to run from a music source (ghetto-banger or what ever) to the line in jack.

Buy a good high quality mic for ur computer and personally i like a program called WavePad (search yahoo for it, its free)
