This depends on where you want to chat. On a lot of severs chat is tied to IM. The solution is to download all the software for both, and show yourself as away or offline on messenger.
Dumping one tends to make the other unstable, they share files.

you can chat from the website for example:-
1- If you want chat in yahoo messenger go to www.chat.yahoo.com sign in from the website and select the room you want enter.
2- MSN messenger go to www.msn.com find where id chat and click on it to enter chat room
