it is called vowel variance...welcome to the inconsistent world of the English language. Why do you think so many schools don't meet "annual yearly progress"? Becuase we have so many English language learners (meaning English as their 2nd language) in our classrooms

Well, if you pronounce "cut" and "but" that way, it doesn't sound too great and is a bit hard to say.

english is a hybrid language...so the rules aren't always consistent.
