you're right. because of competition. girls compare with each other, and as long as they're on top, they can afford to be kind - but if they're way below, they drag you down to be on or below their level. i think that's just human nature - fight for survival and the fittest -
so it's just best to be yourself and avoid comparisons, i think it can be helped, becuase anyway, the bottomline is that nobody is perfect, even if seemingly some are - you just don't know their inner pains and imperfections.

In a short answer it comes down to pecking order. In the American culture there is a dominant patriarchy. Women strive to be "as good as" men. However, amongst women, there is a struggle not to be the "lowest person on the totem pole". The women end up fighting amongst themselfs just to be closer to the top of the power that men hold. This is perpetuated through media, stereotyping, and a lack of education.

Though i myself is a filipina, i do know that its always the same everywhere and its not only common among girls but also with males.. just keep in mind that you can never change people around you but what you can change is how you react towards them.. meaning its ok to be upset if someone is mean, but letting that affect your total emotional and sociological makeup will only give them more satisfaction, after all thats the reason behind all these meanness, i.e. to make u feel the same as they feel inside -- rotten!

We are in competition, for everything from the guys to the best kids. If we are to prove ourselves worthy to parents, friends, and lovers we must always strive to be either the best or make everyone happy.
And it just isn't going to happen.
Not happy with self, not happy with others.
But for some reason our expectations never extend to the men in our lives. Guess we really are not competing with them, just for them?

Young teen women world-wide are all competetively jealous by nature. The cause: estrogen--pretty much in a nutshell....causes them to think THEY are the prettiest; THEY deserve to be noticed....and THEY deserve the hot guy (or girl)....not this threat (and that's the nicest way to say that) to their charms, standing next to them in the ladies room, adjusting her makeup.

The fun really begins when the claws flare out: catfight!!!! Meeeeowwwww!!!!!

Girls, even girlfriends are in always in a state of competition,in America. They compete in sports, grades, clothes, and especially with boys.Girls are jealous of other girls looks, the clothes and shoes they wear, the home they live in,the car that they drive and they are jealous of another girls boyfriend.Girls are vindictive, and love to start false rumors on other girls, with hopes that it will ruin that girls reputation,ot hopefully making her boyfriend to break up with her...Girls are manipulative, and will do anything to get what they feel that, they deserve, not thinking how many other people that they will hurt in the process.
Girls grow up to be women, and these problems only get worse. That is why I have only 3 close female friends. It takes alot for me to trust another female.
I'd rather be friends with men(again, here is another problem:girls are jealous with their boyfrinds female friends.my feeling on that is: If you do not trust your boyfriend, why are you with him?)I am an helply engaged woman and have been involved with my fiancee' for 10 years, and he trusts me with all my male friends,in fact, he is friends with all of them too.

They've proven that girls are more aggressive than boys, particularly when a new subject is introduced into an already formed group.

There's no cultural barrier there. There's always conflicting self images. Some people are obsessed with it so much that they wind up making themselves and everyone around them unhappy.
