I have to choose a book for summer reading (I know, kind of late) but I can't really read a book unless it's really good and I like it. Last year I read 'Rebecca' by du Maurier and couldn't put it down, so I got my assignment done very quickly. This year I have to choose from:
My Antonia by/ Willa Cather
Living/ Annie Dillard
A Farewell to Arms/ Ernest Hemingway
Their Eyes Were Watching God/ Zora Hurston
Babbit or Main Street/ Sinclair Lewis
Natural/ Bernard Malamud
Heart is a Lonely Hunter/ Carson McCullers
Moby Dick/ Herman Melville
Catcher in the Rye/ JD Salinger
A Connecticut Yankee..../ Mark Twain
Color Purple/ Alice Walker
Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it!

You haven't read A CATCHER IN THE RYE? How old are you? I didn't think anyone got out of the 8th grade without reading it. No offense to you.....the school system would be to blame. By all means, read this first. No self -respecting adolescent should be without it.

I'd say try either Catcher in the Rye, Color Purple, Their Eyes Were Watching God
Moby Dick is amazing but really long
Stay away from My Antonia and A Farewell to Arms

Out of the ones you named I've read Their Eyes Were Watching God which I didn't really care for, Catcher in the Rye which was pretty good but it's been so long since I read it i don't remember details, and The Color Purple which I really liked. That's one of my favorite movies as well. If you haven't already, go to amazon.com and type in the name of the book and you should be able to read a little about each one to help you make your choice.

Catcher in the Rye is my favorite book of all time!
Anything by Twain or Hemingway is good, and the Color Purple was great too. I wouldn't recommend Moby Dick, it was boring, at least the first couple chapters were...i could never get any further thru it than that!

Catcher in the Rye/ JD Salinger or A Farewell to Arms/ Ernest Hemingway are popular-
it depends on what you like
go to barnesandnoble.com and read what they are about...
you can always use sparknotes.com if you run out of time!

The ones I liked the most were:
Their Eyes Were Watching God--It was a little hard to get used to at first as it is written just like the person was speaking.
Color Purple--I just loved this one. Wish I had my own copy.
