What is a "keeping room" in a house?

Traditionally, a keeping room was the main -- and only -- room in a house. Think of the Little House books where the downstairs was everything (including master bedroom, kitchen, and living room), and the girls slept in the attic.

Nowadays I believe that it just refers to family sitting room.

it's a fancy way of saying a livingroom.
