because anytime u subtract a negative number, you're adding the opposite of the number behind the subtraction sign

so 8 - (-5) becomes 8 + (+5), or 8+5, which equals 13

You could think about it like this:

8 + (-1)(-5) = 8 + 5 = 13.

Does this make sense, I is really hard to explain in words without being infront of you or without writing a lot. That may only confuse you more.

When you're subtracting from a negative number it becomes positive. The minus sign and negative sign in front of the five cancels each other out so instead of subtracting you are now adding the two numbers.

if you subtract a negative number, it's like adding a positive. If you say "I have 2 apples and someone takes away 1, I have one." but if you say "I have 2 apples and if someone takes away the opposite of 1 (which is negative 1), then they actually gave me an apple, so I have 3.

Because minus into minus is plus...so 8 plus 5 becomes 13...

WHEN YOU ARE DEALING WITH SUBTRACTION AND NEGATIVES, YOU ADD THE OPPOSITE. SO IF IT IS 8-(-5) YOU WOULD DO 8+(+5)

If you subtract a negative number, it is the same as adding that number. If you add a negative number, it is like subtracting that number.
