On Monday i go to court to be sentenced. And the minimal sentence is 1 year in state prison and the max is 15 years. My lawyer says i will probley not get more then 5. Other then this time I have never been arested or been to jail. I have been on house arested since i plead guilty so i do not know what to expect. What will prison be like. Please give me any tips or a idea of what it will be like. I really want to go into this kind of knowing what to expect. I am told in the state jail you spend about 15-20 hours in your cell and the cells are 8x10. What will this be like? The crime was Grand Theft Auto.

Keep to yourself until you get familiarized. Don't accept anything from anyone. Like a cigarette or candy bar, etc. because now you owe them. Don't give anything to anyone because kindness is a weakness and they will not only want more and if you don't give more you just might have yourself a problem. Above all, don't take any sh*t from anyone. Fight back but don't start a fight. It's better to get your butt kicked once while defending yourself than to get it kicked every day because your easy prey.

If they don't automatically assign you a job, volunteer for one. If you don't work you'll be counting the minutes instead of the days. Try to get on the fire team (California). You have to put out forest fires but it's a hell of a lot better than the joint.

Be cool. Don't "try" to be cool. They can spot a phony a mile away. And NEVER tattle on ANYONE.

Just do your time like everyone else and don't complain.
You won't be the only first-timer there. Just don't give anyone a reason to single you out. You'll be OK.

Good Luck

From what I have heard, dudezoid's advice is right on. Ignore the Oz show. If you have a trade or something that will make you useful, that may get you out of the general grind. If not, in time, try to get on a work assignment like the California Forestry Camps or something similar. At least you will get varied scenary. Also, if you are in a large state that has a number of prisons, you may be put in a medium or minimum security prison. Apparently among the worst things is the food. The advice to pray is not bad either. Lots of people find religion in the joint.

Watch "Lock Up" on MSNBC this Friday night. They go inside prisons and show you what it's like.
