george orwell's 1984 was amazing. do you guys think that the totalitarian government in the novel 1984 is pretty similar to the US government?
-goldstein = osama bin laden (ie. the common enemy that can never be caught)
-the ministry of peace = national security council
-being constantly at war with another nation
-"victory gin," "victory mansion" = the thought of the government that is implemented on the US citizen saying that every thing they do, every war they are fighting in, they are winning (war in Iraq being effective)
-"thought police" = FBI, CIA
-growing seeds of fear amongst civilians making it seem that there is a major threat and that only the government can help them
-"double think" = the "we want peace" thought yet the "let's dismantle terrorists" thought
-"telescreens" = american press (well less of the spying part, but the US government probably has some other body to do the deed)
-"proles" = people living in the country side and slums
-brainwashed civilians!

fathead, you say that "constantly at war" is not the case, well look back at american history and how many wars they were involved in, compare that to the other countries. (i'm talking about recent history) lets seee... vietnam, afghanistan, iraq...

and i did not admit that the "telescreen" example was wrong, i just said that it is less powerful than the other examples that i posed.

lastly, im not an american, and thank goodness im not.

one more thing fathead, if you actually read 1984, you should know that the term "thought police" doesnt police your thoughts, they simply just arrest anyone that comes under suspicion, and those that are arrested are never heard of ever again

I absolutely enjoyed that novel too!
I really never thought of how the government described in 1984 can be related to our government because America is not a utopian society.... and even in our english class, we never made such comparison. However, after reading your details, the totalitarian society describes in 1984 does really relate to our government...Amazing!
Good job at this!

There are some similarities, but there are major problems with your analogy.

"constantly at war" is a clearly not the case.

your victory gin applies to every government in existence with the US far less twisted this way than others.

"thought police" - Exactly how has any agency policed thoughts? No, this one is 100% wrong.

You admit that the telescreens example is wrong.

Not sure who you consider to be the "proles"?

I'd have to conclude that you are more brainwashed by the Democrat propaganda than the average citizen is by the Republican propaganda. Remember that the latest poll says 66% of americans believe the war is going badly.

Now try Macbeth!

Of course not! This is a ludicrous accusation.

We are far closer to Nazi Germany.

But in all seriousness. We are moving ever closer to 1984. It's the standard rules of war. Deception. We are in a war, not with Iraq, Not with terrorists. But with very rich and powerful people. They have infiltrated the white house, congress and the senate. They have the leaders of most countries in the palm of their hands.

Just a quick question, if we have thought police why havent you been arrested yet?

You do know that there are countries where you would be shot or beheaded by the government for voicing dissension right?
The US Government is majorly screwed up, but totalitarian? Please!

However I am with you on the brainwashed civilains part, I believe that program is called the public school system.

No, not like "1984." Much more like "Animal Farm."

"All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."

We have, indeed, always been like that.

It sure is looking that way with their spy program (illegal wire taps, phone, computer, etc); the checking what you read; and who knows what else.

Did 1984 have useful idiots? Because you are very useful to the terrorists, and you are an idiot.
