some biographic movies? wasn´t he John? or was he John Jack? im not from the states, so just asking..

As other answers have fairly well stated, Jack is a nickname that is often associated with the Christian name John. Since John is a very common name in the States, sometimes a nickname will be used to distinguish one John from another.

It could be that he simply like that nickname. Another similar case would be Jimmy Carter, another US President. His legal first name is James, but he prefers to be called Jimmy, and he even signed official documents with that nickname.

Jack is another way of saying John....Like Bill is to William......Like Bob is to Robert....Like Dick is to Richard...

I Know it really isn't an abbrviation but that is how it is.

It's one of those funny exceptions for nicknames - like Peggy is a nickname for Margaret.
