What do the initials CVN stand for in the ship's name?
CVN is our ship's "hull classification symbol" while 76 is the hull number. "C" means aircraft carrier, "V" indicates fixed wing (vice rotating wings as on helicopters), and "N" stands for nuclear powered. So CVN means (in Navy-speak) "aircraft carrier, fixed wing, nuclear powered".

The United States Navy CVN-21 program ("21st Century Aircraft Carrier") is the next generation supercarrier for the United States Navy. Before its redesignation as the CVN-21 carrier program this project was known by the initials CVNX carrier program.

It should not be confused with CV 21, the hull designation for the post-World War II carrier USS Boxer, which was in service from 1945-1969.

Carrier Vessel Navy?

Stardog cv6 was the carrier enterprise during WW2 . CVN was designated to the nuclear class ships in the U.S.Navy. I don't know how you got (N) as night operations ,but when I was on the Enterprise in the mid 70's it stood for Nuclear as in CVN-65 USS Enterprise. Wikipedia is a joke to me with all of its misinformation about some of its facts. If you want to find out the true meaning try contacting the U.S. Department of the Navy and ask them...

Multi-purpose Aircraft Carrier (Nuclear-Propulsion)

Not Carrier Vessel Nuclear, because: "The "CV" designation was originally derived from cruisers, since aircraft carriers were seen as an extension of the sea control and denial mission of cruisers. The "V" designation for heavier than air craft comes from the French verb "Voler" (to fly). Since 1935, "CV" has been a two-letter, unitary hull classification symbol, meaning "aircraft carrier."

It's a type of ship: "The current US Fleet of Nimitz-class carriers are to be followed into service (and in some cases replaced) by the CVN-21/CVNX Carrier."

I beg to differ. CV6 (USS Enterprise) was the first US Aircraft Carrier to gain the (N) designation. CV(N)6. N standing for Night operations. After 1975, the N was changed to designate Nuclear. Wiki has a pretty good explanation of all of the hull designations.
