do moths native to the uk have the ability to bite

No!

UK moths don't have anything to bit WITH. Their mouthparts are been fused into a long, flexible drinking tube. Being bitten with that would be like getting bitten by a feather duster.

There are moth species in SE Asia that have evolved the ability to bite. Their drinking tubes have become more rigid and have sharp tips, enabling these moths to drink blood like mosquitoes. And they hurt like hell.

But no European moth is able to bite.

No. Most moths don't have mouths. They eat all they can while in the caterpillar stage, but once they emerge from the cocoon, they live off of what's left in their gut. So no, they don't bite. =)
