What does JV and varsity mean?

Traditionally Junior Varsity is for underclassmen, the freshmen and sophomores. But is an underclassmen is talented enough they'll be bumped up to Varsity by one of the coaches.

Varsity is traditionally for the upperclassmen, the juniors and seniors.

That's why you rarely ever see a junior or senior on the JV team in any sport, unless they just really suck and aren't good enough to play with the big boys.
