Cops have told me that it is the smell that gives it away.
and gives them probable cause

I was smoking weed on a bus bench and I guess some lady called the cops, so they say... Anyway, my lawyer said it's not illegal to smoke on a bench, and the cops had no right to search me. I wish I knew that then.. Oh well

at school,while driving back roads,in front of rich housing projects,at home......but i have to say,i got away with it every time,in California,the cops are cool as long as you don't try to lie or play them,they always make me throw my pipe,dump and stomp my herbs,and tell me i cant drive,but also i cant leave my car and to start walking and when they drive by in 20 min my car had to be gone.....was everytime....i asked a friend who was a cop once and he said it was just to much paperwork,and as long as i kissed their asses and told the truth 90% they let you go...the one at home i had a ferret who walked over my phone and he hit 911 and hung up a cop showed up at the door and looked at me suspicious asking questions,i told him it was an accident and that i had bad sh**s and had to go..
