At the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) I was put completely to sleep when I had a c section with my third child. At first I was given a choice; stay awake (with a pain blocking shot as they called it) and have my husband present with me for the birth or be put completely to sleep in which NO ONE would be allowed in the operating room to watch. Unfortunately the choice was taken from me because of the risk to my own health and I was put to sleep only seconds before the doctor actually cut my stomach and began removing my son.

They can, but it's not likely.

What'll happen is that if it's a planned c-section, they'll use a spinal block to numb you from your chest down, and you will be able to see and hear your baby right away.

If you laboring with an epidural and they decide that a c-section would be best, they'll inject more numbing medication through the epidural that's already in place.

If you were laboring without an epidural, they will try an put the spinal in.

If they don't have time for a spinal, like something had gone wrong with the baby during labor, or there was some emergency, like a car crash, for example, you may be put to sleep. That's not very likely at all, since it's not very good for the baby.

My doctor gave me a choice. I chose to be awake. Right before the doctor started the incision, I said that I had changed my mind and that I wanted to go to sleep. He laughed and said it was too late. I felt no pain and was glad that I stayed awake. My sister has had 3 c-sections. She was asleep only for the first one and she regrets it. My doctor talked to me the whole time which helped with my nervousness. The whole thing was a breeze compared to the natural childbirth I had a year earlier. Not only was that painful, but my baby girl died as a result of birth trauma. My second child delivered by c-section had no problems.

I had a c-section . At first they did not put me under, but then my uterus would not contract and I lost a lot of blood. So then they put me under, but before that they gave me a epidural and some pain killer and other stuff I was awake but did not feel anything.

They do but only in some sort of emergency situation. You should probably be awake to see the baby right after the delivery. You will be numb so you will be fine.

In certain emergency situations they will. Planned cesarians don't require you to be knocked out, just numbed from the waist. Talk to your OB about different pain management options.

Yes you can be put to sleep but spinals are better where you are numb from the waist down, it is safer.

You will not be put under if you're giving birth.. the risks are too high.. c-section or not.

Wouldn't you want to stay awake to witness the birth of your baby?
