With out a doubt, the best old-school punk band would be The Saints. The were everything punk is. They were better musicians than The Ramones and Sex Pistols. They were far more creative, and kept pushing the boundaries of "What punk is" and they did everything on their own terms, pissing off their record company, other punks, and society in general for refusing to dress like punks, and their outlandish behaviour. Listen to This Perfect Day, Know Your Product and Demolition Girl, and see how great they were man.
Nowadays, the best punk band would be a toss up between: Against Me! Mid Youth Crisis, Belke-Peterson Youth, Les Savy Fav, Die! Die! Die! and The Mint Chicks.

My own "vast 3", in alphabetical order, are the conflict, the ineffective Kennedys, and the intercourse Pistols. i like a good number of punk as nicely that, yet those are rather the three punk bands i'm into way greater beneficial than the different. No, i won't have the capacity to outline "real punker". that's a subjective judgment, for starters, and to be elementary i do no longer see plenty element in attempting to outline it. What else could desire to you do as nicely listening to punk? nicely, that's no longer for me to assert, yet merely as a handbook: pay attention to different genres besides, holiday, examine, write, dabble interior the seen or appearing arts, bypass trekking, etc...

I was there way back when, and most of my taste goes back to the originals...Ramones are the greatest ever, period...but check these guys out:
Undertones (pop-punk at its absolute best-if you dig Green Day, you've got to hear at least the first album)
Buzzcocks (forgot them when I first answered...another fantastic, and underrated pop-leaning band...What Do I Get is one of my all-time fav punk songs)
Sex Pistols (nuff said)
The Clash (a bit overrated by some, but still one of the best political punk bands ever)
Dead Kennedys (one of the best of the L.A. bands)
X (the best, IMHO, L.A. originals)
The Cramps (a personal favorite...masters of psychobilly)
New York Dolls/Heartbreakers (Johnny Thunders' band-and his solo album "So Alone" is fantastic)...Dolls were one of the very first, actually
Velvet Underground/Lou Reed (perhaps not always musically, but every punk band, whether they admit it or not, has to trace its roots back to them)
U2...they've gone way past their roots by now, but check out the first couple of albums
Rancid and Green Day, naturally, as well as Nirvana...
think that's a good enough start...all worthy...
P.S. Props to the guy that mentioned the Saints...that's one that, great as they are, slips through everyone's radar...good call, dude...
