I don't think that Columbus himself had syphilis, but at the time it's safe to say that any number of sailors had social diseases.

Well, i live in Mexico and here we celebrate October the 12th as the encounter of the two worlds,but we are aware that people who were travelling with him were just the worst of all ,cause they were people who were in prison because they were criminals,they accepted travelling with him because they didn't have anything to lose and maybe they could gain their freedom. and due to all the time they were traveling they also got many deseaces who were among the whole crew.

I think you are mistaking him with Hernan Cortes. He had a very bad syphilis case, not Columbus.

I agree with Pablo; it was Hernando Cortez who had syphllis not Columbus. The Pox was widespread and was passed from sexual partner to sexual partner which did not always mean from female to male.

That was a pretty popular disease back then. They didn't know about safe sex as of yet. Then again, we know about it now and people still don't think to use it.
