everyone is entitled to their own opinions and everyones opinions should be respected. sometimes people feel so strongly about some things that they want no part in hearing why another person beleives the way they do or even hearing any point of view but their own. without hearing the otherside and respecting every ones opinions how can some one beleive so strongly in something? basically what im asking is how can people have strong opinions about things without fully knowing the otherside and even if they are very well educated about both points of view how can they not respect the other side. things like abortion and religion and politics there are very good reasons for what each person beleives other wise people wouldnt beleive it so why be so quick to critisize? does any one get what im saying or am i just pointlesley rambling again?

I ask myself this same question almost every day. For some reason politics and religion are not to be talked about. Why? Because people will fight? I say we should talk about these two issues because these two issues are the main issues of everything that happens in the world. Religion and politics have started every war. We do not have to agree with everyone's thoughts and beliefs but at least listen and respect them. I listen and sometimes I completely disagree and move on with my life and sometimes I learn something new and think about it and maybe end up changing my own thoughts and beliefs. When we listen we learn.

I think that ultimately the reason is fear. Once some people make up their minds about an issue they simply shut down to other possibilities. They don't want to take in new ideas. That would risk their certainty that they are right and considering opposing beliefs could compromise that.

If they are have researched the topic, weighted the pros and cons of each side, and settled on which one they feel is right then they shouldn't be threatened when they are presented with new information. An educated, mature person should be able to respect another person's choice to believe whatever they want even if they don't personally agree with them.

I get what you're saying. I agree with you for the most part. The thing that I have found about people that makes me lose respect for them the fastest is when they have strong convictions without an iota of why they feel that way. I don't expect everyone to be wise or kind or logical, but if you're going to go around and tell anyone who will listen your opinion on something at least be able to tell them why you think that way.

Honestly, people, in general do not like to hear objections to their opinions. Many people with strong opinions assume they know both sides and are too lazy to truly learn what each side is about. Instead they allow themselves to develop a passion for what ever they choose to believe and lean on the hope that they are right.

I don't know if I am right, but I choose to believe I am and I will defend my opinoin even though I don't want to research it to find out if I am right.

People who are reluctant to hear another person's views are:
1. Self indulgent or arrogant
2. Autocratic
3. Not open and narrow-minded
4. Mentally lazy, because if they are open, they will have to use their brains to assess the different views
5. Misguided into thinking that their views are the only universal truth! This is especially true in religious beliefs.

Maybe they think that if they hear the other persons point of view, they might be right, and they wont seem the better one anymore. But in not knowing, they can pretend, and at least fool themselves, that they are right.

There is an old adage, "never mix Politics or Religion at a party!" There is a real reason for the adage. Good luck

Easy, most people are comfortable in their own little world, if they actually listened to another side of a issue they would have to think about it objectively and most are not capable of that.

Because many people have not been raised in a culture where they're enforced to look outside of themselves to accept other views of looking at things.
