call themseves African American. They are American the same as I am an American. My ancestors came from England and France, but I'm not an English American or a French American! Why can't we all just be Americans?

because of the way the ancestors suffered slavery and to remind the world that they have not forgotten what has happened to them and even today Africans hold a grudge with the America!! believe that and are angry! you should know that my question is why would they claim to be Americans at all! why claim a rapist and kidnapper(america)! as your sugar daddy! that to me is as bad as, accepting the religion which was put upon them knowing they didn't come to America as no christian !now this to me is idiotic behavior! no offense is intended but America owes the black African descendants and must pay, some how, some way and you know just knowledge that they were mistreated and reparations would be a start!
you know the Karma America must and will face is totally deep!
i did this to make you think! They dont claim american as a nationality this is just where they ended up by no fault of their own!!
thank you for the question but you cannot compare the whites history with america and the African history! and i understand yet disagree with you! TOTALLY !

Oh god... Ok look...

Black people are not native to the Americas, they are native to Africa. Any Black person you have ever seen in America or Latin America was born there only because their ancestors were brought over from Africa during the slave era.

As for you, you can only call yourself an English American or French American if either your mother or father is of pure English or French blood.

Anyways, calling yourself American means nothing. It's not like being American means you're a specific culture or race.

I'm black and I wouldn't claim Africa as my heritage if it was the last heritage on earth. I am of Native American descent from both of my parents who married 'Black' people. Africans will tell a black person they're not truly African in a heartbeat. I've had that happen and there's no way I would classify myself as such. Not every black person call themselves 'African American' because a lot of our heritage does not evolve around Africa. It's a choice that's been called to us since the slavery ages. Caucasions classify black people as Africans so you might want to ask them instead.

Unlike your Brittish heritage, the African Americans mostly did not choose to come here. they were captured.. kidnapped and enslaved to get here. The African nation has a fine heritage and it is one to be proud of. (I am not an African American) Do not deny them their heritage by making light of it and saying why can't they just be Americans.

I may be an illigal alien. It depends on which brother I am decended from of some Englishmen who came to the colonies. Since one did so against the wishes of the king, he was an illegal. I would like to be re-patrated to England.

I Hate the term "African," "African American", "American".

I'm only a America to show the land in which I was born. African, African American, American don't show my heritage my culture customs or belief. Only the place in which I am born, it dose not constitute my nationality.

Hey thats a very good question, I neer thought about that. I think that it might be because even though black people are born here and are Americans, in a way they still feel like they are not accepted and have to relate to their homeland to feel good and like they actually have a home. There is alot of unnessecary racism here in this country, which is very interesting since its a very christian country, but you knw those christians only practicing when its convinent.

I've often wondered myself...lol. Am I an Irish/German/French and/ bit of Dutch American? Or just an American?
But what other people have said makes sense, I have to say.

Well, actually... if you are going by race, I'm a Caucasian & African Americans are Negroes. I've never understood why they have such a problem w/ that term... it's scientific, not a racial slur.

Also, I'm called white & take no offense... & there are many, many shades of "white people". I don't understand why "black" carries such a negative connotation.

Just don't know. No reasoning behind such attitudes, it seems.

It's not just African Americans. I know plenty of people who identify themselves as "Irish Americans," "German Americans," "Swedish Americans," ect.

I think it's their way of identifying with their ancestors' culture and beliefs. Personally, I see no harm in it. . .a lot of people these days need stability and a sense of personal identity.

because American is a nationality, not a race. The only people who could consider their ethnic background American are Native-Americans.
