A lot depends on the nature of the business.

At the very least, get a router with an SPI firewall. Avoid wireless if you can, wire is faster and more secure. If you do go wireless, use WPA encryption and MAC address filtering.

Get quality antivirus/antispyware software, Norton Internet security is an good all-around package.

In addition to PC's for the staff, you may need to invest in database servers, print servers or file servers, or any combination of the 3

Sink some money into a backup strategy, and get the tapes/disks stored offsite or in a fireproof safe. You don't want your business to go up in smoke.

You may need a workhorse printer, as well as small special purpose printers for labels, envelopes, color graphics, etc, Put those on a print server so everybody can use them.

Remember to budget for software. Microsoft Office is expensive, and other office software (Quikbooks, Quicken, Money, what-have-you) is even more so. If your business needs special software, it can cost thousands of dollars. Not every computer has to run every program, and not every employee necessarily needs a computer.

Tailor the computers after their proposed use. Servers invariably need more disk space and memory. Machines that do sophisticated graphics should pretty much be top-of-the-line.

A few personnel policies can go a long way. Prohibit personal use of the computers, playing games, surfing **** and answers.yahoo.com, and enforce the policy. Your computers will run better and your employees will not waste so much time.

if u already hav network setup then u just get either a dsl broadband or cable broadband with speed from 4-8Mbps. dsl broadband works with ur existing telephone line wch is most suitable for small businesses but make sure that ur company is within 3-4 mile radius of telephone central office. or u can go for cable broadband wch is ideal for home whr u already hav TV connection. (i wud personally go for DSL as its more secure than cable). with DSL u'll need a DSL modem and telephone line and wid cable u'll need a cable modem. in both the cases jus simply connect the modem to ur router input port (WAN port) this small wire is made up of normally cat 5 or 6 cable wid RJ45 connector
If u havnt setup the network yet then for both connections u'll need either a switch or hub (preferable is switch) wch will b connected to a router. router provides DHCP service and switch will connect w/s together and enable internet sharing.
