Tomorrow is the first day of classes of my sophmore year. Over the last two semesters I have taken notes both by hand and on my laptop. Some classes simply require notes to be taken by hand, math for example. But, I have found that note-taking worked very well on my laptop in other classes, business classes in particular. I used Microsoft OneNote, which made organisation of notes iton classes very easy.
What is your experience?

I had two types of professors, one type who took all the test questions from their lectures and nothing from the books and the other type who wasted your time in class since all of their questions were straight out of the book. Your safest bet is to take notes whichever way works for you until you figure out what type of professor you have. Then if you still feel the need to take notes do whatever works best for you.

The problem with saving your notes is that it will be very difficult to quickly search for the information you need. This is even more so if some time passes. Some day we will have the technology that will allow us to digitize the notes so we can run a search. Such technology exists now but it is limited and doesn't justify the time you will spend. I don't think you will use your notes because it will be much easier to look something up from a book or on the Internet. Also, it is not practical to retain the formula for calculating the surplus caused by decrease in demand or how to integrate by parts. As long as you know those things exist, that is good enough. You might want to keep the notes if you are planning to go to graduate school but only those classes related to your area of study. Otherwise, I'd say get a big recycling bin and go have a party afterwards.

The truth is I am a biology major so most of my classes are science ones. I take notes for some classes, but to tell you the truth, it is very rare that I use them. I do write down everything that the teacher says, and my hand starts to hurt. I use the book to study and learn everything from there. Alot of people use theier laptop, but i can write faster than I can type and I can type at an abovev average speed which is wierd.

if you're a fast typer, then i'd use a laptop. I used to write notes by hand (i didnt have a laptop) and then re-write them and organize them when i got home on my computer. This helped me retain the information. Another girl in some of my classes did this as well and we would e-mail our completed notes to each other in case either of us missed anything. If you're going to share notes with someone, make sure they're willing to share just as much as you are so they're not just using you for your notes.

Download Freemind. It is a free idea processor. Same idea as promoted by Evelyn Wood speed reading class i took many years ago. I was able to take notes for an entire semester of History 102.

google Freemind and try it. it is free...

Once you get the idea you can do it freehand on paper.

Buy a Palm that has a keyboard attachment and ability to download into your computer programs. That worked well for me and was much easier on my back than carrying a laptop around. They can be pretty inexpensive (less than $200 for both the Palm and the keyboard).

Have you tried a tape recorder and then going over the notes when you get home? This might help you retain more information because you will be basically hearing it twice and writing it down.

we didn't have laptops when I went to college (1988 grad), so you're lucky you can use that. We had to do it in longhand..occasionally we could do it by cassette tape (but recording may be illegal now unless the instructor knows they are being taped and approves of that). Otherwise I would take notes in shorthand (that's when I could still read my shorthand). Then there is notetaking, kind of like what court reporters use.
