Right just like there are no similarities between you and a person with a brain.

There aren't? Iraq has degenerated into a civil war even though no one has had the guts to call it that yet. VietNam was a civil war. Try to rebut that statement.

At its present rate - Iraq will go on forever - just like VietNam. Oh that's right, VN was over in 4 years.

The president who was in office at the time of both was too proud and arrogant to cut their losses and bring the troops home. Not coincidentally, both were from Texas. At least one - LBJ - did push through significant homefront legislation during the war. Bush hasn't done diddly.

Both wars divided the nation. This country hasn't been so divided since VietNam.

Both had a Secretary of Defense who didn't have sense enough to come in out of the rain, although McNamara may have been the smarter of the two.

Those are the facts friend, I've lived through both and am sick of American boys dying for the vanity of a political leader who is at best a moron.

i don't think the similarities are on our end. it's on the other end. please allow me to explain:
1. a large percentage of the population (the insurgency) does not want us there.
2. we don't speak the language or understand the customs of the local people.
3. we are not fighting a uniformed army. friend and foe look alike.
4. it is a massive guerilla war which the u.s. has proven very inept at fighting.
5. weak governments full of corruption (some at the top most near the bottom) that cannot control anything on their own.
6. the elected officials (aside from the executive) started out supporting the war and now have turned against it.
7. there is no exit strategy
8. the fighting has ground to a stalemate. one place is taken and another is given up.
9. the president will leave the mess for someone else to clean up. (or so i predict)
10. american military might has proven useless.

i could go on but these are the most obvious correlations i see between iraq and vietnam.

Both have killed people. Both are wars. Both people are dieing for what they believe in(right or wrong they still believe in it) And there are many other similarities. My question to you is were you even around during Vietnam to know what was happening or are just relying on what you have read about. How would you feel to have your friends go and not return in the same condition they left in? How would you feel to see people (oh never mind you are just not worth my time any more)

There is one obvious and glaring similarity...and I can only hope that, if we learned anything from the Viet Nam war, it is this: We can help any nation militarily and economically with all of the assets we can muster, but if the people in that country won't stand up and fight for their own rights and freedom then all of our efforts will fail. We have given the people of Iraq a golden opportunity to control their own destiny, all we can do now is hope they don't squander it.

Yes their is a similarity.....brave american soldiers are answering the call of their nation to go into harms way, not question their leaders but fighting and dieing to help preserve freedom in the world. For those that have a problem with that, feel free to move to another country, so when you open your mouth, they stick a gun into it and make sure you stay silent forever.

both are wars fighting against an insurgency that uses mostly gorilla tactics in a undeveloped (overall) nation... both use religion as a part of warfare... both insurgency have outside (to some degree) funding... both are unpopular overall with the American people... both use the excuse that we're fighting against the "evil" of the day (communism then, terrorism now)... both have caused protests in the U.S....

oh no... there are no similarities... hahahaha

good job on addressing one of my comments (but I have heard of religion being used, but I don't feel like looking it up)... and I didn't say it was the same level... but it doesn't have to be to be a SIMILARITY.... but there are clear SIMILARITIES... as I mentioned...

Biggest similarity is we went to war to "help" these people even though this time around it wasnt the origional reason for invading. The other major one is the popularity of the wars. Both started with some support and neither finished with any support. Even though this one is not it will not finish with any support

If someone knows anything other than what the media depicts of either war, then they would know that any significant similarities would be a long stretch of the truth.

In other words... I completely agree with you...

We went in with a vague idea to create a democratic nation, had no idea how to get out and wasted lives trying to have a victory with honor.

If you choose not to see the similarities, that is your choice
