Jose Rizal was a great Filipino military leader I believe. He may have been a president as well, I don't know. There is a Jose Rizal center for Filipinos in Chicago.
Filipinos have a very interesting culture. They are Asians, yet Spain conquered them and gave them all Spanish surnames, yet they have little in the way of Spanish culture. They eat some Spanish foods like flan and have some Spanish in their language. My wife is from the Phillipines and her language sounds more Chinese with recognizable Spanish words and English thrown in, fascinating.
