I don't think that small town people are meaner and/or more vindictive than their big city cousins. I do think that they are more insular & know more about each other & that it's harder to keep things to yourself in a small town. I have lived everywhere from the country to large & small cities & towns. In my experience people are pretty much the same everywhere in terms of good & bad, but outlooks vary & that's where the conflict arises.

I've lived in 2 small towns one with 16,000 pop. the other 500 pop.
in both town people were rude, stand offish, if somebody was different, or did things different that what was "considered" normal they were mean. And the gossip is awful.

Most people in those two small towns didn't seem to understand how to mind there own business.

That is the best and most insightful question I have ever seen on this site. I am from a small town also and there were 31 people in my graduation class. I noticed that phenomenon after I had left the small town. One of the best movies I ever saw that dealt with the attitudes of small town america was "The Last Picture Show" and I think it should be required viewing. I have tried to analyze this thing and cannot get a grasp on it. People from small towns, esp in middle america in states like Okla., Kan, Tex, Neb, Indiana, and other such states are pretty much all so hateful and narrow-minded. They are awful for the most part. They will smile to your face and stab you in the back the minute you turn around. And their kids are all such losers. Talk about awful. All they want to do is ride around in their old beatup pickup trucks, fish, drink beer, get drunk, smoke pot, shoot and kill something, breed, cuss and fight and listen to their country and western music at the rodeos. They are following in the footsteps of their parents because that was the values they also had in life and they passed them down to their droppings. One thing I also noticed was their abhorance of school and education in general. This, of course, leads to a life of odd jobs at the pool hall or filling station or a carpenter's helper or a general do-nothing and after they discover that this is going to be their life, they do nothing but bitc* about how poor they are and try to bum money off of all of their relatives until they are run off since they are unable to pay any of it back. They automatically turn on "the rich guy" who seems to have everything and they do not realize that it is because this "rich guy" did not shun and education and this landed him a good job that meant something in life. It is sad, but this is the real way it is.

Because they are small town, and people don`t really have something interesting to do so they are bored so they don`t miss any opportunity to fight with somebody, and in the end they get to hate eachother.

Because there's not a whole lot of other things to do since the town is limited for entertainment and shopping places.

I THINK SMALL TOWN PEOPLE ARE COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT IS FAMILIAR TO THEM AND IF THERE IS ANYTHING SLIGHTLY OFF KILTER ...THEIR RESPONSE IS TO BE MEAN AND VINDICTIVE. IT REALLY IS A DEFENSE MECHANISM TOCOVER UP THEIR OWN INSECURITIES

I know exactly what you mean... I lived in Newton, MA for two years and everyone treated me badly (not everyone but most)... maybe it was because I was Hispanic and made more money than them using legal methods!
