1. Use the professor's office hours for one on one help. It really shows them that you are putting effort and going the extra mile to try and understand this. Just be careful not to waste their time, be sure to have specific questions about certain points made in class or about specific terms or problems, in other words, don't just show up and say "I didn't understand today's class".
2. GO study. Don't study where you live, too many distractions, GO to the library, the park etc. I used to leave for class in the morning and not return home until 8 or 9 at night about 3 times a week. When I was home, it was for relaxing or maybe doing some busy work, like typing up a paper.
3. Keep a planner/calendar and a schedule and STICK TO IT. This way, If you allow youself half hour for lunch for example, and you run into your buddy at the cafeteria, you will find it harder to stay and chat for 1 or 2 hours. Use the planner to write in ALL your due dates and exam dates after the first day of school when you get all the syllabi from your professors. This way, there are no surprises, just be sure to look ahead and not just focus on what is due today, but what may be coming up.

Of course there are other things you can do to help yourself, these are some of things I valued as a student and helped me. I'm sure you will find your own mix. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to add that I made some great friends and partied a good amount while graduating with honors, after all, I was a frat boy!

The others who posted have given you some excellent study ideas. You should follow those.

However, I would ask why you think you need a 4.0 gpa? It is very hard to keep a 4.0. Truthfully, most places don't even look at your GPA when hiring for a job. The only time gpa is really important is to get into grad school. However, you can get into grad school with high scores on the GRE. I am 50 years old and about to finish a PhD program. Had I known when I began college that the 4.0 wasn't that critical, I would have definitely had more fun. Employers look closely at your people skills and ability to work with others. You might consider going for a 3.5 or even a 3.8 and having a life outside of school that includes volunteering or other worthwhile tasks.

just do your best. To tell you the truth I am very smart when it comes to school, but some teachers are just extreamly hard, either because they are ugly, or dont have a significant other. Just playing, but some teachers or professors whatever you wnt to call them are crazy and no matter how hard you try you will get the horribble B. I have gotten 3 B's and I am starting my 3'rd year. I am satisfied. The way I look at it i can get 1 B per semester and I will still have a 3.75, which is very satisfactory, but If I go a semester with all A's than even better because next semester I can get 2 B's. But since I wont be that worried about school that semester, I get all A's again because of the lack of stress.

Why do you want a 4.0 it has no actual value? even for medicacl school or grad school or law school, for many people with 4.0 get turned down.

Check with the freshman advisor. Didn't the school hold an orientation? You should find out if they have a study skills course. Also check the tutoring lab.

Our school tells incoming freshmen that for each hour you spend in class expect to spend two hours studying. Do your work ahead of time, put it aside and go back and check it before you hand it in. Don't wait to do a paper the night before it's due.

Is it more important to earn a 4.0 or to learn the material? Students who obsess about the 4.0 memorize material but don't absorb it therefore they don't learn anything. The memorized stuff doesn't stay with them after taking the test. Decide which is more important.

A popular rule of thumb is for every hour in class, a student should study that material for two hours.

Also, if you'd like to get a 4.0, here are some tips:
Go to class. Lectures and class discussions are just as important as the reading.
Keep up with the reading. All the time.
Submit all assignments on time. Follow all directions provided, use proper citation form, and proofread, proofread, proofread.

Here's my best advice, though. TALK TO YOUR PROFESSORS. They have office hours. Go see them during those hours, and come prepared with relevant questions about the material.

Don't stress. If you just apply yourself, you'll do fine. :)

Wow are you serious ?????????

Please get a life .... I just graduated from collegein may with a 3.4 in international business with German and Italian minor and in 2 weeks I am starting taking classes for my masters....

I honestly can say that I NEVER studied more than about an hour every day the nite before ...... that hour included homework for all my classes .... if i even ever did homework .... i barely went to class only for the tests and when i felt like it ...

To be honest , I rather have a LIFE and enjoy myself with my friends instead of spending morning to 9 pm in the library ... are some of you really serious ??????????
Is that really how some people spend their college years ? that is so sad to me, you are only yound once and remember the college years are the BEST years ...... before you have to go into the real world and get a job .... u should enjoy those years rather than spending them alone in the library by yourself ..... college is about finding yourself, who you are and who you like to surround yourself with .... in order to find yourself you have to interact with other people from diff countries and cultures and backgrounds and just people in general ...

please dont spend your college year locked up in the stinky library .... LIVE a lil .... ;)

I chose to not work hard in college, i mean i barely did any work and ended up with a 3.4 GPA ... and I am happy with it ... I could have had a 4.00 if i had actually applied myself, but consider the opportunity cost !!!!!!

You will never get those sat nights back ;)

Enjoy :)

Study instead of partying. Party on the weekends or not at all. Read your textbooks, go to class and take notes.

TAKE EVERY TEXT BOOK AND NOTES THAT U HAVE! STUDY HARD! EVERY DAY FOR LIKE 2 HRS... THEN WATCH TV FOR LIKE AN HOUR THEN STUDY 2 HRS AGAIN! UNTIL U REACH 8 HRS IN TOTAL. 6 HRS OF STUDYING, 2 HOURS OF BREAKS ALL TOGETHER.
