Here is how I would tie it in to the Red Badge of Courage

Young men often idealize war. How often have you seen a kid dress up as an army soldier and go off to war with his toy gun? Teenagers even think that it is noble and patriotic to fight a war. Even some adults who have never served in a war zone have a romanticized notion of war.

However, if you give that teenager a real gun, put him in a soldier's uniform and send him off to the battlefield, he will grow up quickly when he realizes how truly awful war is. There is nothing noble about watching the person next to you die an agonizing death.

In Red Badge of Courage, if I recall the boy raises a hunting dog. He loves the dog and then it dies at the end and flowers grow on it's grave right?? LOL.... It has been 10+ years.

Well, you become more grown and realistic in realizing that most dogs you encounter in your life will not outlive you. I don't think the boy understood this when he got that cute little puppy in the story.

they realize that they have a duty to fulfill...rather than just looking out for themselves.....i know a bit about the red badge of courage how the guy runs off from the battlefront...but then realizes that he needs to help his troops when his one friend gets hurt...

I've never read the book, but I think young people become more realistic through failure and realizing that they're not invincible. Also, through disappointment and loss?
