one of the best reads I have had in a long time was "The Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield. It is about the battle of Thermopylae. A battle where 300 Spartans and their Peloponnese allies fought off an army of over 250,000 Persians for about 4 days. It is a great story(based on a true event)

Foucault's Pendulum is good, but for an introduction to Eco and a real page-turner a la The DaVinci Code, try The Name of the Rose first. (I'm also a huge Jane Austen fan, but something tells me you're a guy, and most guys simply refuse to read Austen. It's their loss and their fault...she's brilliant.)
Also definitely try anything by Jasper Fforde, starting with The Eyre Affair...especially if you like to read. Very funny and well-written.

I enjoyed reading Harry Potter (the whole series ), loved the Shopaholic series..by Sophie Kinsella ( it can cure your boredom and make you lol), Mary Higgins Clark books and recently Something Blue by Emily Griffin...I heard her 1st book was a hit too Something borrowed. If you like suspense Sandra Brown and James Patterson novels are great. Hope you find one here that you like! :)

If you like classic literature I really enjoy Charles Dickens with Oliver Twist and A Tale of Two Cities, etc. There is also Jane Austen works like Emma and Sense and Sensibility.
Besides that, it really depends on what genre you're interested in.
For mystery I like Mary Higgins Clark. They're usually really original and interesting.
For romance/adventure/mystery I really enjoy Victoria Holt who also has two other pen names.
If you want any further suggestions feel free to e-mail me.

sorry to say, but Di Vinci Code and Angel and Demons keep you on the edge of your seat.
also, if there was only one book that you could read, my fave of all favs is THE ALCHEMIST. it'll change your perspective on life.
