Welcome to America! You can find a good map at any bookstore: try Barns and Nobles, half price books, Boarders. I do not know the titles of a good history book, but I bet the librarian at the NY Library will be happy to help you.
Be sure to tell her you are new to America and that you wish to have a book that is very informative, but NOT too technical.
Again.......Welcome from Texas to the USA

I stay in a sleepy little city in mid-Michigan, and that i might desire to assert, it somewhat is a non violent, quiet existence that I do celebrate with. =) no longer something great happens right here; like each physique else, all I hear approximately is information approximately NYC, San Francisco, etc. the only element i can somewhat say and be honest approximately is that people are very civilized. no longer as in well mannered and gracious, yet they do no longer spit on the sidewalk, throw gum out the window, and in assessment to three international locations, you may't good purchase, and we certainly do have a speed shrink, stop indicators, and severe law enforcement officials who're continuously on accountability. needless to say, secure practices is quite secure (different than in Chicago, that's barely some hundred miles faraway from the place I stay... i think of), so no person has to rigidity approximately being mugged in extensive sunlight hours or getting run over by skill of a vegetable cart. of direction, i'm evaluating all this to existence in China, that's the place my mom and father come from. i don't comprehend something approximately Italy, although in case you have an interest, we do have some advantageous Italian eating places top around the corner. :)

I agree, go to a bookstore, and they have some really great atlases and maps of the US. Also, you can read books like "A Concise History of the United States" or books like American HIstory for Dummies for start. Borders has a section called "General US History" that you can browse through. Welcome to the US!
