It's the first in the Harry Potter book series. If you are a fan of the movies, the books give you a lot of details they just can't squeeze into a movie. In Sorcerer's Stone, Harry finds out that he is a wizard, that his parents were a witch and wizard, and heads off to his first year at Hogwarts. He learns about Voldemort, the "Bad guy" in the series, and faces him for the first time. This is the best book to start with, since it is the first. You'll either get hooked and read them all or find that its just not for you.

Good enough to waste your time? Please.
J. K. Rowling writes so well that millions of people have read her books. People gather at book stores hours ahead of time to buy the most recent release. If that isn't an indication of her talent as a writer...
The stories are compelling. The characters believable. The action moves forward on every page. I highly recommend this series.
What would you be doing with your free time if you weren't "wasting it" reading Harry Potter? Watching cr@p on television? Playing video games? Hanging out at the mall? Of course those are activities that will broaden your education and help you with your English classes. Waste your time. Whatever.

It is an introduction to the characters of the Harry Potter series. You find out that Harry, who was orphaned at 15 months old, is being raised by his Muggle (non-magic) relatives who despise all things that they consider abnormal - including him. When he turns 11, he is invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which he accepts. The majority of the book takes place at the school. Harry discovers that his parents - a good witch and wizard- were in fact murdered by an extremely evil wizard and he is celebrated as the one who brought that wizard's reign of terror to a halt - when he failed to murder Harry.
Of course, the evil wizard (Lord Voldemort aka. He Who Must Not Be Named) isn't actually dead, but in spirit form and attempting to find a way to return to power. There is a "sorcerer's stone" that can produce both gold and the Elixir of Life. Lord Voldemort attempts to acquire it and the story tells how Harry and his friends find out about the stone and do what they can to protect it.

If you wanted a two line synopsis I can provide it but if you're asking for something elaborate....sorry! You may want to try reading a book review on Amazon.com
I've read all the books and I'm sure most of us will agree that it's definitely worth your time.

I read a book because I want to read a book, not because I need to be drawn in by someone elses interpretation of it. That's not to say I don't get book recommendations from friends, collegues, acquaintances, people I do not know at all etc etc. But if you need convincing then this sin't the book for you. And also P.S. It does sound like you want someone to write your book report.

I would say go to the library and get the book on tape... its only like 6 hours on tape and that way you can hear the whole story and not have to hurt your eyes reading the book. It would also work very well for a book report :D
