expand the equation. The new look may help it make sense...
1/2 x X x 1/2 x X = ?
you can even rearrange it if you want to...
1/2 x 1/2 x X x X = ?
now, multiply the fractions, and then the variables, or vice versa...
1/4 x X^2 or 1/4 x Xsquared = ?
if you still want a different look, divide X^2 by the reciprocal of 1/4, or 4...
X^2 /4 = ?
if at any time your unsure of your work, substitute for X any number and the result should always be the same for that number regardless of what form you have...
for example, substitute 8 for X...
1/2x8x1/2x8 = 16
or, my final form...
8^2/4 = 64/4 = 16
