Considering most businesses prefer not to keep employees around as to avoid having to pay them pensions and 401k's.

It's important to remember that an employer is not family. Do not trust an employer with your livelihood anymore than you would trust a total stranger to hold your wallet. (ask Enron employees who lost their long-saved retirement funds while their "employers" cashed out securely and let the ship sink around the employees).

I don't think it's good to live like you'll to fired tomorrow, but I think it's best to keep your options open, and perhaps do a little job searching from time to time, and if a better opportunity comes along, take it.

I do....and when I show up the next day and I've stayed all day with no complaints, then I've done a good job and I'll come back tomorrow...and start the whole process again...

I just think you should appreciate your job, that you have one, but don't be so paranoid about it. Don't stop looking for a job, even when you have one. Do your job correctly and don't goof off and the rest you can't control so there's no need to really worry about it.

I'm good friend's with my employer so I don't have to worry about such issues. But I still don't take my job for granted that would be stupid.
