When the computer can no longer determine where the crankshaft is, it goes into what we call "fail safe mode." In this mode, the car will obviously continue to run, but it will run poorly. It is designed so you can get the car to a repair spot.
First of all, you aren't hurting the car running like that. However your mileage will be worse and, as you know, it will lack considerable power. Lastly, depending on which car this is, it may be an indication of a leaking water pump. I wouldn't want to scare you prematurely, but sometimes a leaking water pump is what causes the sensor to fail.
Good luck!

bad crankshaft sensor (engine speed sensor) can cause no start or hard start, and possibly some driveability problems but there are so many more components that can cause this kind of symptoms - the car needs to be properly diagnosed to say for sure.

Sometimes it can just get dirty on the sensor contacts and it will die or fail to start intermittently and may be cleaned. If it just goes out, it will just quit running. Replace.

the best way to tell if it is the crank sensor (I do not think it is) is to take the belt off and start it if it does not vibrate with the belt off then it is an accessory (probably the air compressor)

WOW that can be an expensive part not including labor. Your car wont start, but sounds like you have a vacuum issue.
