Beavis and Butthead were self-aware, self-referential humor. The "MTV generation" loves anything that mocks itself. B & B used to watch MTV videos and critique them - they either "rocked" or "sucked." It was funny on many levels. First of all, it was funny as a critique of the videos. The comments the characters made were actually quite clever and witty, although disguised as idiotic. But it was also funny on an ironic level. They were so uncool that they were cool. You could laugh at Beavis and Butthead, but you also knew people just like them, but on some level you saw yourself in them too.

It seems kind of tame when compared to the shows on today, but back then it was very groundbreaking on what they got away with. Also, it was an interesting concept to mix video clips within the cartoon - kind of like Mystery Science Theatre 3000 for music videos. "Breakin' the law, breakin' the law!" :)
