The nearest-to-Earth supernova candidate is a star designated HR8210 (IK Pegasi). It's 150 light years away and would be a definite danger to life on Earth if the supernova occurred. http://www.physicsforums.com/archive/index.php/t-31734.html

The closest star to us that will become a supernova is Betegeuse, in the constellation Orion. Not to worry -- it's about 1500 light-years away. It will make a great show in the sky, but it's too far away for the radiation to affect us. And no, our sun won't become either a nova (only binary stars do that) or a supernova (our sun is far too small).

The star Betelgeuse, in the Orion belt is a red giant and will go super nova sometime in the next 10,000 years.

No, the nearest possible supernova is in excess of 50 light years away.

The greatest astronomical threat to Earth (meteorites notwithstanding) would be the Sun's transition to a red giant, which will occur long before it "goes out".

In this phase, it would consume all planets closer than Mars.

Hope this helps.

There are noticeable supernovas every few hundred years or so. Generally, a noticeable supernova is one that occurs in nearby galaxies.
