Somebody said laptops get laggy because of age (4 years) regardless of care to the computer!

All PC's do, they accumulate obsolete data over the years, if you install and uninstall, and if spy-ware, adware, and Lot's of CPU usage, Once in awhile, about every year, I do a fdisk, format, and reinstall, this helps with the lagging, it wipes the hard-drive of junk and put's a clean OS back on and refreshed.... I'm not sure exactly what you think you've been told.

The hardware does not generally get any slower than it was when you first purchased it. However, Windows and the software you install easily can.

Over time as you install new software and uninstall unused programs, junk is often left behind in the registry. The registry is like the garage in Windows that is accessed all the time, especially at bootup. The more bloated it becomes, the slower your overall performance. There are programs out there like Registry Mechanic that can analyze and remove a lot of the junk in there, however, it won't catch everything.

Also from everyday web surfing & downloading, viruses and spyware are other threats that easily slow a PC down. Sometimes the quickest way to solve a slowness issue is to format the drive and reinstall Windows clean. That usually gets you back to the level of performance you had when you first purchased the PC.


As for it mattering whether or not it's a laptop or desktop, it doesn't really. The only real difference here is that a laptop is more compact and consists of many proprietary components making it difficult or impossible to upgrade many features. A desktop, on the other hand, pretty much gives you the option to upgrade any feature you'd like, allowing the PC to stay caught up for a couple years with newer technology that's released...
