Im curious about how a running back is supposed to try and run over a defender when he has to because i know your supposed to try and avoid potential tackers.......so anyways it cant be safe to run your helmet into the guys chest because of possible neck injury.....am i wrong is that how your supposed to do it and run your helmet into the guys chest or is there another way they teach you to do it........im saying this when you cant run your shoulder in him and you cant stiff arm him

NOT a simple question

- you drop the inside shoulder, head on HIS outside arm, keep your feet driving under you, and press up field by allowing his forward drive to push you that way - to the outside...

When you get the ball you're already heading for the hole indicated by QBs call...yes when you take the ball you are leaning forward and your head and shoulders are lowered...
- we call this the "plow" position - but your face is up.

As you approach the line...if it does what it's supposed to, your looking at butts (the backside of your men) and those butts are going to show you the clearest path - usually the hole you need to hit.

When you take the ball and step to that hole...it's inevitable that a linebacker will be there to make contact...
you will learn very quickly that dropping your inside shoulder to his tackle pushes you naturally to the outside - and if you keep your feet - you will be able to accelerate into that push and break the tackle.

- whats more important is how you tuck and plow...if you hit a tackler lower and harder you'll drive right through him.

When you can't run your shoulder at him or stiff arm him then it means that your going to the ground. Because raming your helmet in the guys chest will only hurt you. The defender will have a shoulder pad on and deflect the hit. But your head will get a big time neck shock that could paralize you for life. If you don't have any choice then put your head down and ethier go to the ground or keep your feet moving.

We were all made to run it's why we have a Nuchal ligament, Achilles tendon and a large Gluteus Maximus they all stabilize us while running. That's why we stand upright, so we can breathe more than one time per step unlike most other running mammals which cannot breathe more than once per step, we can take 2,3 or even 4 if needed!. It's the reason we have short toes, long toes only help walking and climbing, not running. The reason we sweat is so we can run for longer distances and not overheat like most other mammals who have to stop and pant to cool down. And don't buy into that "you're not built to run" crap, we were all made to be the best endurance runners on the planet our feet and legs were designed to absorb the shock of running, only 2% of the World's 6 billion+ people have bad bio-mechanics.

Lol, Coach's don't teach you to run anyone over. That's a choice, the purpose is to punish the tackler, but more then likely you have made a move on that person and have them off balance which make it easier to run them over, unless running through a specific hole and a linebacker fills the hole then have no choice. I hope that helps you

Running your head into a guy is a good way to end up paralyzed. If you can't lead with the shoulder on a hit, don't hit. Better to dive or slide than break your neck.

how about a forearm shiver? granted it won't work as well as a linebacker sheding a block but what the hell. also try slashin g his arm away with your forearm as he tries to make the tackle. this combined with a spin move might give more yardage.
if you are between the tackles just remember to stay low and hit the hole square. by doing this it means you'll deliver a blow to the defender and even if he does tackle you you will probably fall foreward.

A running backs job is to do WHATEVER he has to do to gain yards.
